2、arningmayormaynotreflectethicaloutcomesthatmimichumandecision-making.Tomeetthisgoal,theCommitteehasdrawnfromclassicalethicstheoriesaswellasfromthedisciplinesofmachineethics,informationethics,andtechnologyethics.Asdirecthumancontrolovertoolsbecomes,ononehand,furtherremoved,butontheo
3、therhand,moreinfluentialthaneverthroughthepreciseanddeliberatedesignofalgorithmsinself-sustaineddigitalsystems,creatorsofautonomoussystemsmustaskthemselveshowculturalandethicalpresumptionsbiasartificiallyintelligentcreations,andhowthesecreatedsystemswillrespondbasedonsuchdesign.Byd
4、rawingfromovertwothousandyears’worthofclassicalethicstraditions,theClassicalEthicsinAutonomousandIntelligentSystemsCommitteewillexploreestablishedethicssystems,addressingbothscientificandreligiousapproaches,includingsecularphilosophicaltraditionssuchasutilitarianism,virtueethics,an
5、ddeontologicalethicsandreligious-and-culture-basedethicalsystemsarisingfromBuddhism,Confucianism,AfricanUbuntutraditions,andJapaneseShintoinfluencestowardanaddressofhumanmoralityinthedigitalage.IndoingsotheCommitteewillcritiqueassumptionsaroundconceptssuchasgoodandevil,rightandwron
6、g,virtueandviceandattempttocarrytheseinquiriesintoartificialsystemsdecision-makingprocesses.Throughreviewingthephilosophicalfoundationsthatdefineautonomyandontology,theCommitteewilladdressthepotentialforautonomouscapacityofartificiallyintelligentsystems,posingquestionsofmoralityina
