2、meinsteadusethisvaluableopportunitytodealimmediatelywiththequestionsthatshoulddeterminethiselectionandthatweallknowarevitaltotheAmericanpeople.Tendaysago,PresidentReaganadmittedthatalthoughsomepeopleinthiscountryseemedtobedoingwellnowadays,otherswereunhappy,evenworried,aboutt
3、hemselves,theirfamilies,andtheirfutures.ThePresidentsaidthathedidn'tunderstandthatfear.Hesaid,"Why,thiscountryisashiningcityonahill."AndthePresidentisright.Inmanywaysweareashiningcityonahill.Butthehardtruthisthatnoteveryoneissharinginthiscity'ssplendorandglory.Ashiningcityisp
4、erhapsallthePresidentseesfromtheporticooftheWhiteHouseandtheverandaofhisranch,whereeveryoneseemstobedoingwell.Butthere'sanothercity;there'sanotherparttotheshiningthecity;thepartwheresomepeoplecan'tpaytheirmortgages,andmostyoungpeoplecan'taffordone;wherestudentscan'taffordthee
5、ducationtheyneed,andmiddle-classparentswatchthedreamstheyholdfortheirchildrenevaporate.Inthispartofthecitytherearemorepoorthanever,morefamiliesintrouble,moreandmorepeoplewhoneedhelpbutcan'tfindit.Evenworse:Thereareelderlypeoplewhotrembleinthebasementsofthehousesthere.Andthere
6、arepeoplewhosleepinthecitystreets,inthegutter,wheretheglitterdoesn'tshow.Thereareghettoswherethousandsofyoungpeople,withoutajoboraneducation,givetheirlivesawaytodrugdealerseveryday.Thereisdespair,Mr.President,inthefacesthatyoudon'tsee,intheplacesthatyoudon'tvisitinyourshining
