3、tedagainstmyelin(terMeulenandHall,1978;Wisniewski,1977;WeinerandStohlman,1978).Inacuteviralinfectionsithasbeenassumedthattheinfectionofoligodendroglialcells,leadingtocelldestruction,maybethemainmechanismforinducingthisneuropathologicallesion.Inthecaseofapersistentvirusinfectionino

4、ligodendrogliacells,however,itisconceivablethatfunctionalimpairmentofoligodendrogliacells,andlortheinductionofanimmunereactiontotheagentwhichmaycross-reactwithbrainantigens,couldeventuallycausedemyelination.Therefore,pathogenicstudiesonsubacuteorchronicdemyelinatingencephalomyelit

5、idesinassociationwithviralinfectionsmayprovideinformationonthemechanismsinvolvedindemyelination.Inconnectionwiththis,infectionsbymurinecoronavirusesareofincreasinginterest(Wegeetal.,1982).StrainJHMisknownforitsabilitytocausedemyelinatingencephalomyelitisindifferentanimalspecies(Ch

6、eeveretal.,1949;Baileyetal.,1949;Weiner,1973;PowellandLampert,1975;Fleury,1980).Additionally,thevirushasatendencytocausechronicinfectionsaccompaniedbydemyelination(Herndonetal.,1975;StohlmanandWeiner,1981).Inrats,dependingonthebiologicalpropertyofthevirusmaterialused,thegeneticbac

7、kgroundandimmuneresponseofthehost,asubacuteorlatedemyelinatingencephalo-myelitiscanbeinduced,accompaniedbyprimarydemyelination(Nagashimaetal.,1978,1979;Sorensenetal.,1980).Thisprovidesamodelforanalysisofthevirusandhostfactorswhichinteractinthepathogenesisofthesediseases.Inthischap
