3、fthreeJHMvirusisolatesinprimaryratglialculturesandfoundacorrelationwiththeirabilitytocausedisease.WildtypeJHMvirushasthepropensitytocauselyticinfectionsinglialcultures,andatemperature-sensitivemutantdesignatedJHM-ts43invariablyproducespersistentinfect
4、ionswithreducedcytopathiceffects(CPE)ascomparedtothewildtype.Moreover,anon-neurotropicisolate,designatedJHM-Pivirus,produceseithernon-productivepersistentinfectionsatlowmultiplicityofinfection(m.o.i.)orproductivepersistentinfectionsathighm.o.i.,with,h
5、owever,noCPE.Thepheno-typicexpressionofpersistenceisglialcell-dependent,sinceallthreevirusesproducesimilarlylyticinfectionswhengrownonvarioussusceptiblecelllines.ThegeneticbasisofJHMviruspersistencecanbeexplainedatthelevelofdirectvirus-glialcellintera
