4、eAllendemeteoriteisclassifiedasachondrite.ChondritestaketheirnamefromtheGreekwordchondros—meaning"seed"—anallusiontotheirappearanceasrockscontainingtinyseeds.Theseseedsareactuallychondrules:millimeter-sizedmelteddropletsofsilicatematerialthatwerecooledintospheresofglassandcry
5、stal.Afewchondrulescontaingrainsthatsurvivedthemeltingevent,sotheseenigmaticchondrulesmusthaveformedwhencompactmassesofnebulardustwerefusedathightemperatures—approaching1,700degreesCelsius—andthencooledbeforethesesurvivinggrainscouldmelt.Studyofthetexturesofchondrulesconfirms
6、thattheycooledratherquickly,intimesmeasuredinminutesorhours,sotheheatingeventsthatformedthemmusthavebeenlocalized.Itseemsveryunlikelythatlargeportionsofthenebulawereheatedtosuchextremetemperatures,andhugenebulaareascouldnotpossiblyhavelostheatsofast.Chondrulesmusthavebeenmelt
7、edinsmallpocketsofthenebulathatwereabletoloseheatrapidly.Theoriginofthesepeculiarglassyspheresremainsanenigma.EquallyperplexingconstituentsofAllendearetherefractoryinclusions:irregularwhitemassesthattendtobelargerthanchondrules.TheyarecomposedofmineralsuncommononEarth,allrich
