3、enbrokenopen,Allendestonesarerevealedtocontainanassortmentofsmall,distinctiveobjects,sphericalorirregularinshapeandembeddedinadarkgraymatrix(bindingmaterial),whichwereonceconstituentsofthesolarnebula—theinterstellarcloudofgasanddustoutofwhichoursolarsystemwasformed.TheAllendemete
4、oriteisclassifiedasachondrite.ChondritestaketheirnamefromtheGreekwordchondros—meaning"seed"—anallusiontotheirappearanceasrockscontainingtinyseeds.Theseseedsareactuallychondrules:millimeter-sizedmelteddropletsofsilicatematerialthatwerecooledintospheresofglassandcrystal.Afewchondru
5、lescontaingrainsthatsurvivedthemeltingevent,sotheseenigmaticchondrulesmusthaveformedwhencompactmassesofnebulardustwerefusedathightemperatures—approaching1,700degreesCelsius—andthencooledbeforethesesurvivinggrainscouldmelt.Studyofthetexturesofchondrulesconfirmsthattheycooledrather
6、quickly,intimesmeasuredinminutesorhours,sotheheatingeventsthatformedthemmusthavebeenlocalized.Itseemsveryunlikelythatlargeportionsofthenebulawereheatedtosuchextremetemperatures,andhugenebulaareascouldnotpossiblyhavelostheatsofast.Chondrulesmusthavebeenmeltedinsmallpocketsoftheneb
