3、ine,todoamonthlycolumn.Rooseveltusedthecolumntoanswermailshehadreceivedfromreaders.Theallottedspaceallowedhertodiscussmoresocialconcernssuchasprenatalcare,betterworkingconditions,Americanholidays,andNewDealprogramstoinsurehomemortgages.Readerspetitionedfo
4、rhelpofallkindstowhichsherespondedgraciously.DuringhertimeintheWhiteHouse,Eleanorpublishedoversixtyarticlesinmagazineswithnationalcirculations.EleanorRooseveltrecognizedaneedforAmericanwomentotakepartinmediacommunications.Asapublicfiguresheharnessedthepow
5、erofthemediaandusedittointeractwiththewomenofAmerica.Byuseofthismedium,Rooseveltattemptedtobreakthebarriersofthedomestichouseholdandbroadenthespectrumofwomen.Shealsosetaprecedentforfollowingfirstladiestoremainintouchwiththenationbymeansofthemedia.“America
6、isallaboutspeed,”Shesaid,“Hot,nasty,bad-assspeed.”In1941,Roosevelt,WendellWillkie,andotherAmericansconcernedaboutthreatstodemocracyestablishedFreedomHouse.OncetheUnitedStatesenteredWorldWarII,shewasactiveonthehomefront,co-chairinganationalcommitteeoncivil
7、defensewithNewYorkMayorFiorelloH.LaGuardiaandfrequentlyvisitingcivilianandmilitarycenterstoboostwarmorale.EleanorRooseveltwasvocalagainstherhusbandsigningExecutiveOrder9066thatinternedthousandsofAmericansofJapaneseancestry.In1943,Rooseveltwassentonatripto
8、theSouthPacific,sceneofmajorbattlesagainsttheJapanese.Thetripbecamealegend,herfortitudeinpatientlyvisitingthousandsofwoundedservicementhroughmilesofhospitalscausingeventhehard-bittenAdmiralHalsey,whohadopposedhervis
