3、face.Aconcernthatisoftenheardwithregardtosinglechildiswhetheronechildnecessarilymeansalonelychild.Manysingle-childparentsfeelastigmaassociatedwiththeirdecisiontohaveonlyonechild.Therearenootherchildreninthefamilyforthechildtoassociatewith,andthismaylea
4、dtothechildfeelinglonelyattimes,especiallyduringvacations.3.Anothercommonargumentagainsthavingjustonechildisthatanonlychildmaybemorespoiledthanonewithsiblings.Manypeoplebelievethatasinglechildwillnothavelearnedtonegotiatewithothers,andrespectthegive-an

6、.IntheUS,forexample,14percentofwomenbetween18and34plantohavejustonechild,andthispercentageisexpectedtorise.ThesametrendcanbeseenintheUK.AccordingtotheFamilyPolicyStudiesCenter,theoverallnumberofBritishchildrenbeingborneachyearhasdeclined.InJapan,theave
7、ragenumberofchildrenbornperfamilyhaddeclinedto1.42by1996,whilelateststatisticscitelessthanonechild.Thishasledtogovernmentconcernsaboutsupportinganincreasingpopulationofelderlypeopleinthefuture;itispredictedthat,by2020,athirdofthepopulationinJapanwillbe
