3、ofthe1950shadconsiderableinfluenceonthe1960sand1970sideaofcounterculture.Duringthislaterera,theconnotationsofBeatexpandedtoincludetherebelliousrhythmsofrock’n’roll(TheBeatles).BeatGenerationThecharacterplayedbyJamesDeaninRebelWithoutaCause(1955)typifiesthefeelingofoppressionfeltbythememberso
4、ftheBeatGeneration.Morerecently,"poetryslams”--readingsandrecitationsofaggressivepersonalpoetryoncollegecampusesandinurbancoffeehousesandbars--havesignaledarevivalofBeatpoetry.HenryRollins,formerleadvocalistforthepunkrockbandBlackFlag,hasfiguredsignificantlyinthisrevival.TheoriginofthetermJa
5、ckKerouacfirstusedtheterm"BeatGeneration"inhistalkwithJohnClellonHolmes(1926~1988)abouttheimplicationsoftheLostGenerationandexistentialismin1948.ThenTheNewYorkTimescarriedanarticleentitled"ThisIstheBeatGeneration"in1952.Theword"Beat"isoriginallyajazztermforrhythm.WhenitappliestotheBeats,itca
6、nmeanbeatendown,destroyed,demolished.TheBeatswerebeatendownEmergenceManypeopleassociatetheBeatGenerationofthefirsthalfofthe1950swithcrime,delinquency,immorality,andamorality.EvensomeprofessorsandcriticsfeelsorrythatthehighidealoftheBeatsbecameverydegenerateinpractice.AlthoughtheBeatGeneratio
