3、yedanindigenoussystemofconstructionthathasretaineditsprincipalcharacteristicsfromprehistorictimestothepresentday.OverthevastareafromChineseTurkistantoJapan,fromManchuriatothenorthernhalfofFrenchIndochina,thesamesystemofconstructionisprevalent;andthiswasthe
4、areaofChineseculturalinfluence.Thatthissystemofconstructioncouldperpetuateitselfformorethanfourthousandyearsoversuchavastterritoryandstillremainalivingarchitecture,retainingitsprincipalcharacteristicsinspiteofrepeatedforeigninvasions—military,intellectual,
