3、boutlanguage,themajorworksinlinguistictheoryhaveseldombeenanalysedandsynthesizedaslanguage,specifically:asamodeofdiscourseseekingtocircumscribelanguagebymeansoflanguage.Perhapsthislackisdueinparttothelimitationsimposedbytheoristswhodidnotaddressdiscourseasalinguisticphenomenon

4、,oronlymarginallyso.Perhapstoo,itwastacitlyassumedthattheoriesdonotcriticallydependonthelanguageinwhichtheyhappentobeexpounded.Today,however,discoursehasbecomeamajorareaofconcern;andthedependenceofconceptsandargumentsonthediscoursethatconstitutesthemiswidelyacknowledged.1.2The

5、refore,toexaminelinguistictheoriesasdiscourseconstructionsisbynomeanstodiscounttheirconceptualimportance,buttoinsistonattendingverycarefullytotheemergenceofthoseconceptionswithintheoriginaldiscoursebeforeproceedingontothemoreusualstagesofabstractionandparaphrase.Thisinsistence

6、canbeparticularlyinstrumentalintracingthedevelopmentofterminology,andthecontinuity,evolution,orchangeinthemajorlinesofargumentnotmerelybetweentheorists,butwithintheworkofanindividualtheorist.1.3Onthewhole,thehistoryofthe‘scienceoflanguage’hasnotbeenunmanageablydiffuse.Majorthe

7、oreticalworksandframeworkshavenotbeenoverlynumerous.Andonthewhole,thedisciplinehasbeenfairlyparsimoniousinitstheorizing,indeedresolutelysointhefaceofthecomplexityoflanguage.Yetwecancertainlynotclaimthattheproblemsaddressedbyourpredecessorshavebynowvanishedorbeencompletelyresol

8、ved.Instead,wefrequentlysenseaneedtoreturntothoseproblemsandr
