3、undZhoukoudianisquiteextraordinary,especiallythoseofthePlioceneandPleistocene,andthereforeattractgeologiststovisitthearea.Ontheotherhand,theareaalsobearsrichOrdovicianlimestonewithwhichthelocalhabitantsmakelime.Itisbyquarryingthelimestonethatlocalhabitantsfind,insomefissur
4、es,theso-calledDragonBones,whichscientistscallfossils.Withintheresearchframeworkofthelaboratory,FatherTeilharddeChardin,aneminentFrenchpaleontologist,andC.C.YoungstudiedthefossiliferousdepositsatZhoukoudiananddividedtheminto10layersin1929.Andthemostimportantdiscoveryofallw
5、asmadeonthe2ndofDecemberin1929.ItwasinabranchingcavewhereafissurecrossesthemaincavethatPeifoundthefirstandalmostpleteskullcapofPekingmanintheredsandyclay,whichisequivalenttothe10thlayerinthemainsection.Thediscoveryattractedgreatattentionfromscientificcircles.Thetwohuman-li
6、keteethfoundbeforewerenotenoughtoconvinceeveryonethattheybelongtoPekingMan,buttheskullcapgavemoreanatomicalproofandwasmuchmoreconvincing.AnimportantPaleolithicsite,thissitewasfirstexcavatedin1927,inacaveonDragonBoneHillatZhoukoudian,southwestofBeijing.In1929,skullfossilsof
7、Pekingmanwerediscoveredhere,providingconcreteevidencefortheexistenceofprimitivemanintheBeijingareaandmarkingamile-stoneinthehistoryofpaleo-anthropology.Sofar,atotalof6skulls,15piecesoflowerjaw-bones,157teethandnumerousotherbonesegmentsfromthebodiesofabout40humanshavebeenex
