3、llythoseofthePlioceneandPleistocene,andthereforeattractgeologiststovisitthearea.Ontheotherhand,theareaalsobearsrichOrdovicianlimestonewithwhichthelocalhabitantsmakelime.Itisbyquarryingthelimestonethatlocalhabitantsfind,insomefissures,theso-calledDragonBones,whichscientistscallfossils.With
4、intheresearchframeworkofthelaboratory,FatherTeilharddeChardin,aneminentFrenchpaleontologist,andC.C.YoungstudiedthefossiliferousdepositsatZhoukoudiananddividedtheminto10layersin1929.Andthemostimportantdiscoveryofallwasmadeonthe2ndofDecemberin1929.Itwasinabranchingcavewhereafissurecrossesth
5、emaincavethatPeifoundthefirstandalmostcompleteskullcapofPekingmanintheredsandyclay,whichisequivalenttothe10thlayerinthemainsection.Thediscoveryattractedgreatattentionfromscientificcircles.Thetwohuman-liketeethfoundbeforewerenotenoughtoconvinceeveryonethattheybelongtoPekingMan,buttheskullc
6、apgavemoreanatomicalproofandwasmuchmoreconvincing.AnimportantPaleolithicsite,thissitewasfirstexcavatedin1927,inacaveonDragonBoneHillatZhoukoudian,southwestofBeijing.In1929,skullfossilsofPekingmanwerediscoveredhere,providingconcreteevidencefortheexistenceofprimitivemanintheBeijingareaandma
7、rkingamile-stoneinthehistoryofpaleo-anthropology.Sofar,atotalof6skulls,15piecesoflowerjaw-bones,157teethandnumerousotherbonesegmentsfromthebodiesofabout40humanshavebeenexcavated,providingconcretedataforthestudyoftheevolutionofpre-historicbiologyandthedevelopmentofpr
