4、somournedthedeathofacatandhadthebodyofthedeadcatwrappedinclothbeforeitwasfinallylaidtorest.ThisrespectforcatscarriedovertotheRomanEmpirewherecatsweretheonlyanimalsallowedintotemples.Thisfactwasprobablyduetotheabilityofcatstokeepthetemplesfreeofmiceandrats.WiththecomingoftheDarkAgesinEurope,theplac
5、eofcatsinsocietytookaturnfortheworse.Becausetheywereassociatedsocloselywiththe“oldreligions”inEgyptandintheRomanEmpire,christiansbegantoassociatecatswithpaganbeliefs.Catshadareputationashelpersofwitches.Whenapersonwasaccusedofbeingawitch,acatwouldoftenbeputontrialwiththeperson.Thecatwouldbetortured
