2、ildingcommunityforparticipantsattendingagraduatecourseintwodistantsites.Studentsintwocohorts—atSimonFraserUniversityandTheUniversityofHongKong—participatedinajointcourseonknowledgebuilding.Tosupportthediscourse,weusedweeklyclassesatbothsites,asharedKnowledgeForumdatabase,virt
3、ualvisitations,andvideoconferences.UsingBielaczacandCollins’(1999)frameworkoflearningcommunity,wea)discussthecharacteristicsandevolutionoftheknowledgebuildingcommunity;b)illustratehowwecouldIdentifyandassessknowledgebuildinginonlinecontributions;andc)examinehowdifferentmodali

6、thisframeworktodiscusssomeinitialresultsfromadesignexperimentinwhichweattemptedtodevelopa(local)learningculturebasedonBereiterandScardamalia’s(1996)theoryofknowledgebuilding.Thedesignexperimentonknowledgebuildingatourrespectiveuniversities,SimonFraserUniversity(SFU)andtheUniv
