1、AbstractWithrapiddevelopmentandwidespreadapplicationsofcloudcomputingoverrecentyears,notonlythequantitybutalsothescaleofdatacentersworldwidehaveincreaseddra・matically.However,thisalsoincursskyrocketingpowerconsumptionsofsuchlarge-scaledatacenters,whichconsistofmassivefarmsofserversa

2、ndabundantcomputingavailability.Undertheglobalcontextofsevereenergystarvationandadverseenvironmentalimpact,theissueofhowtobalancethepower-performancetradeoff'ofdatacentershostingdiverseapplicationshasdrawnsubstantialattentionfromgovernments,industriesaswellasacademia.Ananalyticalfr

3、ameworkispresentedforcharacterizingandoptimizingthepowerperformancetradeoff'inSoftware-as-a-Service(SaaS)cloudplatfonns.Theobjectivesaretwo-fold:(1)MaximizingtheoperatingrevenuewhenservingheterogeneousSaaSapplicationswithunpredictableuserrequests,and(2)Minimizingthepowerconsumptio

4、nwhenprocessinguserrequests.Toachievetheseobjectives,aunifiedprofit-maximizingobjectiveisconstructedtojointlyconsiderrevenueandcostinaneconomicview.Anofflinesolutiontomaximizethesupremeboundoftheobjectiveisfirstdeveloped,inorderto(1)justifythevalidityofourtheoreticalmodel,and(2)esta

5、blishabenchmarktoexaminetheeffective-nessofothercontrolsolutions.Asahighlightofourcontributions,wetakeadvantageofLyapunovOptimizationtechniquestodesignandanalyzeanoptimalyetpracticalcontrolframework,whichmakesonlinedecisionsonrequestadmissioncontrol,routing,andvirtualmachine(VMs)sch

6、eduling・Theproposedonlinecontrolframeworkcanbeextendedtoaccommodateavarietyofdesignchoicesandoperationalrequirementsinadatacenter.Specifically,bufferingfacilitiescanbeintroducedtoalleviatetheburstyadmittedrequestsandtoimprovetherobustnessofthesystem,andapowerbudgetcanbeenforcedtoimp

7、rovethedatacenterperformance(dollar)perwatt.Mathematicalanalysesandsimulationshavedemonstratedboththeoptimality(intermsofacost-effectivepower-performancetradeoff)andsystemstability(intermsofrobustnessandadaptivitytotime-varyingandburstyuserrequests)achievedbytheproposedcontrolframew
