3、hedomesticeconomyandininternationaltrade.LiberalizationoftradeinserviceswasincludedaspartoftheWTOagendabasedontheexpectationthatincreasedtradeinserviceswillleadtosignificantwelfaregains.Thesegainsareexpectedtoarisefromthefactthatservicesprovideessent

4、ialinputsinproductionandalsosatisfyconsumptiondirectly,asinthecaseoftransportationandtelecommunicationservices.Thispaperexamineswhetherservicetradecontributestoincreasedtradeinmanufacturedgoods.Oneargumentputforthforliberalizingservicetradeisthatserv

5、iceimportsmaybenecessary,especiallyfordevelopingcountries,toenhancetheirinternationalcompetitivenessandboostexports(see,forexample,HoekmanandBraga(1997),OECD).Markusenetal.(2000)notethat"..importedservicesmayprovidecrucialmissinginputswhichallowacoun
