3、eenusedinindustriesforvariousIEapplications(qualitycontrol),costreduction,workmeasurement,methodimprovement,inventorymanagementetc.,forinstance.TheuseofABCanalysisininventorymanagementstartedfromtheearly1950'sandhasbecomethebasisforthemanagementandcontrolofinventorysystems.Th
4、reeproblemsassociatedwiththetraditionalABCanalysis:(1)howtoselectasuitablemeasuringcriterion,(2)Whatisthemostappropriatenumbersofcategory,and(3)howtoclassifyitemsintoclasses.Inthispaperourfocuswillbeontheclassifyingruleswithassumptionsthatannualdollarusageisthecriterionandthe
5、suitablenumbersofcategoryisthree.Theprinciplesandtechniquespresentedhowevercanbeappliedtoothermeasuringcriteriawithdifferentnumberofgrouping.Although20-80rulesprovidesanapproximateguidelinefortheclassification,peopleusingthisrulealwaysencounterdifficulty,duetoitsambiguityands
6、ubjectiveness.Thelaboriousworkinvolvedintheanalysisalsopreventsitsbroaderapplications.AcomputerizedsystemwithJapanese'sclassifyingalgorithmnotonlycanlargelysimplifytheanalysisbutalsomakethetaskofclassificationmoreobjectively.ABCPHENOMENAABCprinciplehasbeenusedinthefieldofecon
7、omicsformanyyears,andisoftencalledpraetorprincipleorLorenzlaw.Theprinciplestatesthatasmallfractionofitemsaccountsforalargeamountofthetotalvalueoractivity.Manyofourreallifecaseshavethistypeofphenomenon.SomeexamplesfromdifferentareasaregiveninTable1.•Afewcomponentshaveextremely
