1、METHOD8510COLORIMETRICSCREENINGPROCEDUREFORRDXANDHMXINSOIL1.0SCOPEANDAPPLICATION1.1Method8510isacolorimetricscreeningprocedurethatmaybeusedtodeterminethepresenceofthefollowingtwocompoundsinsoilsamples:CompoundAbbreviationCASNumber*Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazineRDX121-82-4Octah
2、ydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocineHMX2691-41-0*ChemicalAbstractsServiceRegistryNumberOtherchemically-relatedexplosiveandpropellantcompounds,includingnitraminecompoundsandorganonitrateesters,alsoreactwiththetestreagentstoformthepink-to-reddishcolortypicalofthisgroupofchemicals.
3、Suchcompoundsincludenitroguanidine(NQ),nitroglycerine(NG),pentaerythritoltetranitrate(PETN),nitrocellulose(NC),andtetryl.Thismethoddoesnotmeasuretrinitrotoluene(TNT)ifitisfoundbyitself.However,TNTdoesinterfereifmixedwithRDXoranyoftheothernitraminesandnitrateesterslistedabove(seeSec.4.2
4、).1.2ThisscreeningproceduremaybeapplicableforsiteremediationpurposeswhensupportedbydatafromothertechniquessuchasHPLC,GC/MS,orotheranalyticalmethodscapableofprovidingspecificqualitativeandquantitativeanalysis.Italsomaybeusedtodeterminethemostappropriatesamplingpointsforstandardlaborator
5、ytestingfortheinitialscreeningofasitethatisexpectedtocontainanyoftheexplosives/propellantslistedabove.Aswithanyscreeningprocedure,thedatamaynotbeappropriateforregulatorycompliancepurposes.1.3ThismethodisdesignedtoprovideresultsforRDXandHMX.Ifthehistoryofthesiteshowsthatcompoundsotherth
6、anRDXandHMXpredominate,thenanalyticalstandardsoftheappropriatecompoundsmaybeutilizedinthegenericprocedure.ThecommercialtestingproductisdesignedforRDXandHMXanalysisonly.1.4Aswritten,thisscreeningmethodmaybeusedtoidentifythosesoilsampleswithRDXconcentrationsbetween1and20mg/kg.Extractsofs
7、ampleswithconcentrations>20mg/kgofRDXshouldbedilutedandreanalyzed.TheprocedureisapproximatelythreetimeslesssensitivetoHMXthantoRDX.Therefore,forsiteswhereHMXisthepredominantexplosive,HMXshouldbeusedastheanalyticalstandardandextractsfromsoilsampleswithconcentrations>60mg/kgshouldbedil
