1、METHOD3815SCREENINGSOLIDSAMPLESFORVOLATILEORGANICS1.0SCOPEANDAPPLICATION1.1Method3815isascreeningprocedureforestimatingthetotalconcentrationofvolatileorganiccompounds(VOCs)insoilandsolidsamples.Itisstrictlyascreeningprocedureandisdesignedprimarilyforfielduse.Inorderforthisscreeningproceduretobeeffe

2、ctive,theVOCsofinterestatthesitemustbeknowninadvanceandmustbedetectablebythephotoionizationdetector(PID)usedintheprocedure.1.2Theresultsofthisscreeningproceduremaybeusedtoguideothersamplecollectionactivities,particularlythecollectionofsoilsamplestobeanalyzedbytheclosed-systempurge-and-traptechnique

3、describedinMethod5035ortheheadspacetechniquedescribedinMethod5021.Theresultsofthisscreeningproceduremaybeusedtodistinguishbetweensamplesthataresuitableforthe"lowconcentration"proceduresinMethods5035or5021,versusthosesamplesthatcontainsufficientlyhighconcentrationsofVOCsthattheyshouldbepreparedusing

4、the"highconcentration"proceduresinthosemethods.Thisscreeningproceduremayhaveotherusesaswell.1.3ThisproceduremustnotbeusedtodecidethatasampleorsiteisfreeofVOCcontamination,ortodecidethatsamplesneednotbecollectedforquantitativeVOCanalysis.Rather,itisascreeningprocedurethatmaybeusedtochooseanappropria

5、tesizesampleforanalysisusingMethods5035,5021,orotherpreparativeproceduresforVOCs.Theappropriatechoiceofsamplesizebenefitstheoveralldatacollectionactivitybyensuringthatadequatesensitivitycanbeachieved,whileprovidingreasonableprotectionagainstoverloadingtheanalyticalinstrumentationusedinquantitativep
