2、adoptedbytheBureauofIndianStandards,afterthedraftfinalizedbytheTimberandTimberStoresSectionalCommitteehadbeenapprovedbytheCivilEngineeringDivisionCouncil.Thisstandardwasfirstpublishedasatentativestandardin1954andwassubsequentlyrevisedandissuedasafirmstandardin1961.Withtheuseofthiscodeoverape
3、riodof6years,theSectionalCommitteefeltthatitmightberevisedsoastomakeitup-to-dateandalsotoincludesomemoreinformationonprophylactictreatment,diffusionprocess,etc.Secondrevisionofthestandardwas,therefore,broughtoutin1967andthethirdrevisionin1982.Inthethirdrevision,besidesmodifyingdurabilityandt
4、reatabilityfiguresforsomeofthespecies,modificationsweremadeinTable2givingrecommendedpracticesforpreservationoftimberfordifferentserviceconditions.Inthisrevision,treatmentprocessfortreatingrubberwood,khasipine,poplar,etcingreenconditionhasbeenincludedbesidesmodifyingdurabilityandtreatabilityf
5、iguresforsomeofthespeciesandinclusionofsomenewspeciesinTable3andfurthermodificationshavebeenmadeinTable2.Sincethesubjectofpreservationandtreatmentofrailwaysleepershasbeencoveredunderaseparatestandard,referencetorailwaysleepershasbeenomittedfromthisstandard.However,itdealswithtrackwoodensleep
6、ersforotheruses.Withtherapidindustrialandagriculturaldevelopmentofthecountry,thedemandfortimberforvariouspurposeshasincreasedconsiderablyandinviewofthelimitedavailabilityofnaturallydurablespecies,suchasteak(Tectonagrandis)andsal(S/roreurobusta),itisimperativethatsuppliesofdurabletimberareaug
7、mentedbyselectedtimbersoflesserdurabilitywhich,whensuitablytreated,wouldgiveadequatelifeunderserviceconditions.Preservativetreatmentoftimber,therefore,formsaveryimportantpartofthenationalefforttoconservethematerialresourcesofthecountry,andtoachieve
