3、.Thisdone,myinvestigationwillterminate,asitwillhavereachedthepointwheretheproblemofthedreammergesintomorecomprehensiveproblems,andtosolvethesewemusthaverecoursetomaterialofadifferentkind.Ishallbeginbygivingashortaccountoftheviewsofearlierwritersonthissubject,andofthestatusofthed
4、ream-problemincontemporaryscience;sinceinthecourseofthistreatiseIshallnotoftenhaveoccasiontorefertoeither.Inspiteofthousandsofyearsofendeavour,littleprogresshasbeenmadeinthescientificunderstandingofdreams.Thisfacthasbeensouniversallyacknowledgedbypreviouswritersonthesubjectthati
5、tseemshardlynecessarytoquoteindividualopinions.Thereaderwillfind,intheworkslistedattheendofthiswork,manystimulatingobservations,andplentyofinterestingmaterialrelatingtooursubject,butlittleornothingthatconcernsthetruenatureofthedream,orthatsolvesdefinitelyanyofitsenigmas.Theeduca
