3、tinguishedfamilies.Havinginheritedaconsiderablelandedestatefromhisfather,JeffersonbeganbuildingMonticellowhenhewastwenty-sixyearsold.Threeyearslater,hemarriedMarthaWaylesSkelton,withwhomhelivedhappilyfortenyearsuntilherdeath.Theirmarriageproducedsixchildren,butonlytw
4、osurvivedtoadulthood.Jefferson,whoneverremarried,maintainedMonticelloashishomethroughouthislife,alwaysexpandingandchangingthehouse.MajordeedsJeffersonwasborninAlbemarleCounty,VirginiaonApr.13,1743.Jeffersonattended(1760-1762)theCollegeofWilliamandmaryIn1769heservicea
5、sarepresentativeintheVirginiaHouseofBurgesses.HerepresentedVirginiaintheSecondContinentalCongressin1775.Thefollowingyear,hedraftedtheDeclarationofIndependencewithJohnAdams,BenjaminFranklin,RogerSherman,andRobertR.Livingston.AgainintheVirginialegislature,introducedanu
6、mberofbillsfortheestablishmentofreligiousFreedom.InJune1779,JeffersonwaselectedgovernorofVirginia.In1785hebecameministertoFrance.AsthefirstsecretaryofstateinWashington’scabinet.Jeffersonbecamevice-presidentin1796.Hebecamepresidentin1800.Inthefinal 17 years of hislife
7、,Jefferson’smajor accomplishment was thefounding(1819)of the University ofVirginia.OnJuly4,1826,the50thanniversaryoftheDeclarationofIndependence,JeffersondiedatMonticello.HisachievementThomasJeffersonwasthethirdPresidentoftheUnitedStates.ThomasJeffersonwas"authorofth
