3、terminetheworldwidedistributionoflaborforthegiganticstreamofcommoditiesthatnowflowsacrosstheircounters.ThedeindustrializationofDetroit,Pittsburgh,andClevelandentailednotjustthedestructionofaparticularsetofindustriesandcommunities,butalsotheshiftingofpowerwithinworldcapi-talismfrommanufactur
4、ingtotheretailsector,whichtodaycommandsthesupplychainsthatgirdletheearthanddirectsthelaborpowerofaworkingclasswhosecon-ditionreplicatesmuchthatweoncethoughtcharacteristicofonlythemostdesperate,earlystagesofcapitalistgrowth.Allthisisgraphicallyapparentuponavisittothetwomostdynamicnodesoftran
5、snationalcapitalismtoday.ItiseasytogettoBentonville,Arkansas,whereWal-Marthasitsworldheadquartersinanunimpressive,low-slungbuildinghardbythecompany’soriginalwarehouse.TherearelotsofdirectflightsfromDenver,Chi-cago,LaGuardia,andLosAngelestothisonce-remoteArkansastown.Itisstillnotverybig.Hard
