3、rmcanhaveanynumberofsynonyms.Marxcalledituniversalization,butalsotheworldmarket,atermthatcertainlyremainsusefulforustoday.Asastageincapitalism,Icallitlate,whileotherscallitflexibleorinformational.Andasaculturalformation,Ihaveanalyzeditaspostmodernity,ate
4、rmnoteveryoneaccepts,andeventhosewhodoarenotnecessarilyinagreement—tendingtolimititsmeaningtophilosophiesofrelativism(ifyoudislikeit)orofantiessentialismandantifoundationalism(ifyougreetitwithenthusiasm).I’llcomebacktothepostmodernlateron.Globalizationca

6、reusefultoinsistonthehistoricorigi-nalityofthisstage,inwhichinternationalrelationsbecomedominantratherthansecondaryorincidental.Infact,whatweconfronttodayisanimmenseinternationaldivisionoflabor,whichhascertainlybeenanticipatedatcertainmomentsofthepast,bu
7、thasnowbecomebothuniversalandirreversible,withconsequencesforculturefullyasmuchasforeconomics.I’vetriedelsewheretoshowthatthisnewphenomenonmustbegraspeddialectically,orinotherwordsasaunionofopposites,assomethingthatcanbecelebratedjustasmuchasitcanbegreet
