3、quentlyheallegedthathismindwasablankfromthemomentofhisescapefromtheLadyVain.Hiscasewasdiscussedamongpsychologistsatthetimeasacuriousinstanceofthelapseofmemoryconsequentuponphysicalandmentalstress.Thefollowingnarrativewasfoundamonghispapersbytheundersigned,hisnephewandheir,butunaccompaniedbyanyde

4、finiterequestforpublication.TheonlyislandknowntoexistintheregioninwhichmyunclewaspickedupisNoble'sIsle,asmallvolcanicisletanduninhabited.Itwasvisitedin1891byH.M.S.Scorpion.Apartyofsailorsthenlanded,butfoundnothinglivingthereonexceptcertaincuriouswhitemoths,somehogsandrabbits,andsomeratherpeculia

5、rrats.Sothatthisnarrativeiswithoutconfirmationinitsmostessentialparticular.Withthatunderstood,thereseemsnoharminputtingthisstrangestorybeforethepublicinaccordance,asIbelieve,withmyuncle'sintentions.Thereisatleastthismuchinitsbehalf:myunclepassedoutofhumanknowledgeaboutlatitude5'S.andlongitude105

6、'E.,andreappearedinthesamepartoftheoceanafteraspaceofelevenmonths.Insomewayhemusthavelivedduringtheinterval.AnditseemsthataschoonercalledtheIpecacuanhawithadrunkencaptain,JohnDavies,didstartfromAfricawithapumaandcertainotheranimalsaboardinJanuary,1887,thatthevesselwaswellknownatseveralportsinthe
