2、SinceIbelievethatRawlshasinfluencedKantscholarshipinbothoftheseways,Ishallhavesomethingtosayabouteach.Buthavingsaidthat,letmeaddadisclaimer:thesetwokindsofinfluencearelesseasytodistinguishthanonemightthink,especiallyontheconceptionofthesubjectwhichIamabouttodescribe.Letmestartwiththe
3、methodologicalpoint.InRawls’sclasseshisstudentswereexposedtoanattitudetowardsthehistoryofphilosophy,andespeciallythegreatfiguresofthephilosophicaltradition,thatIknowIwasnotaloneinfindingexhilarating.Icanbestcharacterizethisattitudebycontrastingitwithanother.Itisstillcommoninsomecircl
4、estomakearatherstrictseparationbetween“doingphilosophy”and“doingthehistoryofphilosophy.”Accordingtotheviewthatthesetwoactivitiesareclearlydistinct,whichIwilcall“thestrictseparationview,”whenyoustudyagreatphilosopherhistorically,youraimistoreconstructthephilosopher’spositionasexactlya
5、spossible,or,ifitdevelopedandchangedovertime,tochartthesechangesasaccuratelyasyoucan.Theenterpriseisconceivedasascholarlyone,and,inacertainway,thephilosopher’sviewisconceivedashavingfrozenorsolidifiedonthedaywhenhedied,and,tothatextent,ashavingdiedwithhimBythatImeanthatadeadphilosoph
6、er’sviewsaretreatedasatheory,acertainbodyofdoctrineorganizedinalogicalway,withsomeofthedoctrinesderivedfromordependentuponothers,andtensionsandinconsistenciesnotednowonlyasblemishesinthefinalproduct.Itispossibleinsteadtoseeadeadphilosopher’sviews,asIthinkwedoseealivingone’s,assomethi
