2、oodAnal.Methods(2012)5:381–387AbstractTheaimofthisstudywastoevaluatetheusefulnessofvisible(VIS),near-infraredreflectance(NIR)andmid-infrared(MIR)spectroscopycombinedwithpatternrecognitionmethodsastoolstodifferentiategrapejuicesamplesfromcommercialAustralianChardonnay(n=121)andRiesling(n=91)vari

3、eties.Principalcomponentanalysis(PCA),partialleastsquaresdiscriminantanalysisandlineardiscriminantanalysis(LDA)wereappliedtoclassifiedgrapejuicesamplesaccordingtovarietybasedonbothNIRandMIRspectrausingfullcross-validation(leave-one-out)asavalidationmethod.Overall,LDAmodelscorrectlyclassify86%an

4、d80%ofthegrapejuicesamplesaccordingtovarietyusingMIRandVIS-NIR,respectively.Theresultsfromthisstudydemonstratedthatspectraldifferencesexistbetweenthejuicesamplesfromdifferentvarietaloriginsandconfirmedthattheinfrared(IR)spectrumcontainsinformationabletodiscriminateamongsamples.Furthermore,analy

5、sisandinterpretationoftheeigenvectorsfromthePCAmodelsdevelopedverifiedthattheIRspectrumofthegrapejuicehasenoughinformationtoallowthepredictionofthevariety.TheseresultsalsosuggestedthatIRspectroscopycoupledwithpatternrecognitionmethodsholdsthenecessaryinforma-tionforasuccessfulclassificationofju
