1、TheUniversityofManchesterDegreeCongregationsJuly2011TheInaugurationofTheUniversityofManchesterAtmidnighton30September2004,UMISTandtheVictoriaUniversityofManchesterweredissolvedandthesingleinstitutionofTheUniversityofManchestercameintoexistence.TheformalIna

2、ugurationoftheUniversitytookplaceonFriday,22October2004whenHerMajestyTheQueenvisitedthecampustopersonallypresenttheUniversity’snewRoyalChartertoCo-ChancellorAnnaFordataspecialceremonyheldintheWhitworthHall.Thenewinstitutionhasadistinguishedheritage.Itcantr

3、aceitsrootsbacktotheformationoftheManchesterMechanicsInstitutein1824,whichlaterbecameUMIST.TheVictoriaUniversityofManchesterwasfoundedasOwensCollegein1851andbecameEngland’sfirstcivicuniversityin1880.Thetwouniversitiesfirstbeganworkingtogetheralmost100years

4、ago.Theyweresituatedonneighbouringcampusesandthisenabledthemtodevelopanumberofjointcourses,departmentsandservices.Theytookthedecisiontomergein2003.ThecreationofTheUniversityofManchesterhasbeenhailedasoneoftheboldestandmostambitiousinitiativesinhighereducat

5、ion.Thispioneeringspiritcarriesontoday,withtheaimtobecomeoneoftheworld’stop25universitiesby2015backedbyanongoing£650millioninvestmentprogrammeinstaffandfacilities–thelargestsuchinvestmentprogrammeinBritishhighereducation.FromthePresidentandVice-ChancellorI

6、welcomeyouall–graduands,familymembersandfriends–toTheUniversityofManchesterforthisdegreecongregation.ThisisatimeofcelebrationforallofusandIverymuchhopethatyoufinditanenjoyableoccasion.Aseachgraduandispresentedforconfermentoftheirdegree,theUniversitysharesw

7、ithyouallagreatsenseofprideintheawardtheyhaveworkedsohardtoattain.Forthoseofyougraduatingtoday,theseceremoniesmarknottheendofyourrelationshipwiththeUniversitybutthestartofanewstage.ItismyhopethatthelinksbetweentheUniversityandyouwillgroweverstrongerandIloo
