3、ghUniversity.HecompletedhistrainingonMay8,1945.FowleswasassignedinsteadtoOkehamptonCampinthecountrysidenearDevonfortwoyears.During1947,aftercompletinghismilitaryservice,FowlesenteredNewCollege,Oxford,wherehestudiedbothFrenchandGerman.ItwasalsoatOxfordthatFowlesfirstconsid
4、eredlifeasawriter,particularlyafterreadingexistentialistslikeJean-PaulSartreandAlbertCamus.ThoughFowlesdidnotidentifyasanexistentialist,theirwriting,likeFowles',wasmotivatedfromafeelingthattheworldwaswrong.NewCollege,Oxford,whereFowlesattendeduniversity.TeachingcareerFowl
5、esspenthisearlyadultlifeasateacher.HisfirstyearafterOxfordwasspentattheUniversityofPoitiers.Attheendoftheyear,hereceivedtwooffers:onefromtheFrenchdepartmentatWinchester,theother"fromarattyschoolinGreece,"FowlestooktheGreekjob.During1951,FowlesmethisfuturewifeElizabethChri
6、sty.FowleswashappyinGreece,especiallyoutsideoftheschool.Hewrotepoemsthathelaterpublished,andbecameclosetohisfellowexiles.Butduring1953Fowlesandtheothermastersattheschoolwerealldismissedfortryingtoinstitutereforms,andFowlesreturnedtoEngland.OnApril2,1954FowlesandElizabethw
7、eremarriedandFowlesbecamestepfathertoElizabeth'sdaughterfromherfirstmarriage,Anna.Afterhismarriage,FowlestaughtEnglishasaforeignlanguagetostudentsfromothercountriesfornearlytenyearsatSt.Godric'sCollege.LiterarycareerDuringlate1960,thoughhehadalreadydraftedTheMagus,Fowlesb
