3、rsarenowwidelyusedintelecommunications.Inaddition,claddingpumpedfiberallowstheefficientconversionofmultimoderadiationfromhighpower,lowcost,broad-stripesemiconductorlaserdiodesintothesingle-modeemissionoffiberlasers.Withitsbroadgainbandwidthandhighopticalconversionefficiency,Yb-dopedsilicafiberrepr

4、esentsanattractivemediumforthegenerationandamplificationofhighenergyultrashortopticalpulses.However,thesepotentialadvantagesofYb-dopedsilicafiberasagainandnonlinearmediumformode-lockedlasersandultrashortpulseamplifiershavebeenlesswellstudied,anditwasnotuntil1999thatsignificantresearchinterestfirst

5、appearedinYb-fiberchirppulseamplifier(CPA)systems.Thisthesisdescribesthedevelopmentofthefirstpracticalandstable,femtosecond,Yb-fiberoscillator,andofanYb-fiberamplifierbasedCPAsystem(pulses~10µJ,<500fs).NovelaspectsofthesystemincludetheuseofahighextinctionratioElectro-Opticmodulatorforpulseselectio

6、n,andthedevelopmentofacompactchirped-fiber-ndrdBragg-grating(CFBG)pulsestretcherthatprovidesboth2and3orderchirpcompensation.Recentlypublishedtheoreticalresultshavedemonstratedthattheasymptoticsolutionforultrashortpulsesinahighgainfiberamplifierisalinearlychirpedpulse,whichcanthereforeberecompresse

7、dwithastandardgratingcompressor.Thisthesisreportsthefirstexperimentalcomparisonofnonlinearpulseevolutiontowardstheasymptoticformusingacascadedamplifiersystem.The‘directamplification’systemwasconstructedbyremoving
