1、DiscussionandconclusionsThemainpurposeofthisstudywastodevelopanewmethodtoestimaterootbiomassusingrootdiameterandaveragerootdensity.Accordingtotheresultsofthefieldexperiment,forcoarserootofthesametreespecieswithdiameterslargerthan0.5cm,estimatedrootbiomasshadgoodagreementwit

3、elbasedonparameterΔTfrom2GHzfrequencyantennas.ThemajoradvantageofparameterΔTisthatitonlydependsonthegeometricdimensionofthereflectorandisindependentofsignalstrength.Asaresult,intheradarprofiles,ΔTisonlyrelatedtotheshapeofthereflectedwaveandisindependentofamplitude,whichde-c

4、reaseswithrootdepth.Accordingly,itcouldbeusedtopreciselyestimaterootdiameterwithoutconsideringtheeffectsofradarwaveattenuation.Forthesamereason,rootbiomassestimationbasedonestimateddiameterbytheGPRmodelisalsounaffectedbyrootdepthorradarsignalat-tenuation.Thisresultedinhighc

5、onsistencybetweenesti-matedandmeasuredvalueswithanR2largerthan0.8.Batnoretal.[20]usedsignalintensitytoestimaterootdi-ameterandbiomass,inwhichthedeterminationcoefficientsbetweentheextractedparameterandrootdiameteratdepthsof15cmand30cmwere0.81and0.55,respectively,andthedeterm

6、inationcoefficientwithrootbiomasswasonly0.55.Thiswasprimarilyduetotheinfluenceofradarsignalenergyattenuationwithdepth[20].Insubsequentstudies,researchersimprovedtheradardataprocessmethodandobtainedadeterminationcoefficientof0.68betweentheparameterandrootbiomass;however,iton

7、lyappliedtorootsatthesamedepth[22–24].Basedontheseresults,itisevidentthatthenewmethoddevelopedinourstudyismorerobustandaccuratethancurrentmodelsthatdirectlyesti-materootbiomassbysignalintensityofGPR.Insummary,themainconclusionsofthisstudyare:(1)rootdensityofUlmuspumila,atyp
