2、afortheperiod1994–1998wereaggregatedandanalyzedusingtheMAAP5accidentanalysispackagedevelopedbytheTransportResearchLaboratory,UKPublishedresultsofrecenttransport-relatedepidemiologicalandothersurveysprovidedanadditionaldatasource.Accordingtothe1994–1998policedata,roadt

3、rafficcrasheswerealeadingcauseofdeathandinjuriesinGhana.Theotherleadingcausesofdeathandinjuriesareoccupationalinjurieswhichinvolvenon-mechanizedfarmingandtribalconflicts.Themajorityofroadtrafficfatalities(61.2%)andinjuries(52.3%)occurredonroadsinruralareas.About58%mor

4、epeoplediedonroadsintheruralareasthaninurbanareas,andgenerallymoreseverecrashesoccurredonruralroadscomparedwithurbanareas.Pedestriansaccountedfor46.2%ofallroadtrafficfatalities.Themajorityofthese(66.8%)occurredinurbanareas.Thesecondleadingpopulationofroadusersaffected

5、wasridersinpassenger-ferryingbuses,minibusesandtrucks.Themajorityofthese(42.8%)werekilledonroadsthatpassthroughruralareas.Pedestriancasualtieswereoverrepresented(nearly90%)infiveregionslocatedinthesouthernhalfofthecountry.Effortstotacklepedestriansafetyshouldfocusonth

6、efiveregionsofthecountrywheremostpedestrianfatalitiesoccurinurbanareas.Policiesarealsoneededtoprotectpassengersincommerciallyoperatedpassenger-ferryingbuses,minibusesandtrucksbecausethesevehiclescarryahigherriskofbeinginvolvedinfatalcrashes.Keyword:Ghana;traffic-relat
