2、abularyhasbeencarefullychosenafterathoroughstudyofallthewell-knownfrequencylistsofEnglishwords.Furthermore,onlythemostcommonand‘entral’meaningsofthewordsinthelisthaveactuallybeenusedindefinitions.Wehavealsousedaspecialcomputerprogramthatcheckseveryentrytoensurethatw
3、ordsfromoutsidetheDefiningVocabularydonotappearindefinitions.WordclassrestrictionsForsomewordsinthelist,awordclasslabelsuchasnoradjisshown.Thismeansthatthisparticularwordisusedindefinitionsonlyinthewordclassshown.Soanger,forexample,isusedonlyasanounandnotasaverb.But
4、ifnowordclassisshownforaword,itcanbeusedinanyofitsusualwordclasses:answer,forexample,isusedindefinitionsbothasanounandasaverb.CompoundwordsDefinitionsoccasionallyincludecompoundwordsformedfromwordsintheDefiningVocabulary,butthisisonlydoneifthemeaningiscompletelyclea
5、r.Forexample,thewordbusinessman(formedfrombusinessandman)isusedinsomedefinitions.PrefixesandsuffixesThemainlistisfollowedbyalistofcommonprefixesandsuffixes.Thesecanbeaddedtowordsinthemainlisttoformderivedwords,providedthemeaningiscompletelyclear.Forexample,thewordne
6、rvousness(formedbyadding-nesstonervous)isusedinsomedefinitions.PhrasalverbsPhrasalverbsformedbycombiningwordsintheDefiningVocabulary(forexample,putupwith)arenotusedindefinitionsinthedictionary,exceptinaverysmallnumberofcaseswherethephrasalverbisextremelycommonandthe
