1、InCatholicteaching,theSacramentofPenanceisthemethodoftheChurchbywhichindividualmenandwomenmayconfesssinscommittedafterbaptismandhavethemabsolvedbyapriest.Althoughitisnotmandatory,theCatholicriteistraditionallyconductedwithinaconfessionalboxorbooth.Thissacramentisknownbyma
2、nynames,includingpenance,reconciliationandconfession(CatechismoftheCatholicChurch,Sections1423-1442).WhileofficialChurchpublicationsalwaysrefertothesacramentas"Penance","Reconciliation"or"PenanceandReconciliation",manylaypeoplecontinuetousetheterm"confession"inreferenceto
3、thesacrament.FortheCatholicChurch,theintentofthissacramentistoprovidehealingforthesoulaswellastoregainthegraceofGod,lostbysin.CatholicsbelievethatpriestshavebeengiventheauthoritybyJesustoexercisetheforgivenessofsinshereonearthanditisinJesus'HolyNamebywhichthepersonconfess
4、ingisforgiven.Intheologicalterms,thepriestactsinpersonaChristiandreceivesfromtheChurchthepowerofjurisdictionoverthepenitent.TheCouncilofTrent(SessionFourteen,ChapterI)quotedJohn20:22-23astheprimaryScripturalproofforthedoctrineconcerningthissacrament,butCatholicsalsoconsid
5、erMatthew9:2-8,1Corinthians11:27,andMatthew16:17-20tobeamongtheScripturalbasesforthesacrament.TheCatholicChurchteachesthatsacramentalconfessionrequiresthree"acts"onthepartofthepenitent :contrition(sorrowofthesoulforthesinscommitted),disclosureofthesins(the'confession'),an
6、dsatisfaction(the'penance',i.e.doingsomethingtomakeamendsforthesins)[1].Thebasicformofconfessionhasnotchangedforcenturies,althoughatonetimeconfessionsweremadepublicly.[2]Typicallythepenitentbeginssacramentalconfessionbysaying,"BlessmeFather,forIhavesinned.Ithasbeen[timepe
7、riod]sincemylastconfession."Thepenitentmustthenconfesswhathe/shebelievestobemortalsinsinordertobereconciledwithGodandtheChurch.Thesinnermayalsoconfessvenialsins;thisisespeciallyrecommendedifthepenitenthasnomortalsinstoconfess."Withoutbeingstrictlynecessary,confessionofeve
