3、ible,as,forinstance,robustinference(usingadjustedlikelihoodratiotests)andtheuseofthebootstrapinamultivariatesetting.Thereferencescontainsover150entriespost-1982.Themaindevelopmentofthetextissupplementedbyover135problems,mostofwhichareoriginalwiththeauthors.Aminimumbackgr
4、oundexpectedofthereaderwouldincludeatleasttwocoursesinmathematicalstatistics,andcertainlysomeexposuretothecalculusofseveralvariablestogetherwiththedescriptivegeometryoflinearalgebra.Ourbookis,nevertheless,inmostrespectsentirelyself-contained,althoughadefiniteneedforgenuin
5、efluencyingeneralmathematicsshouldnotbeunderestimated.Thepaceisbriskanddemanding,requiringanin-tenselevelofactiveparticipationineverydiscussion.Theemphasisisonrigorousproofandderivation.Theinterestedreaderwouldprofitgreatly,ofcourse,frompreviousexposuretoawidevarietyofstat
