2、nthelast25yearswiththeword“identity”inthetitleinordertounderstandhowethno-musicologistshavetreatedthissubject.Thesurveyrevealsthattheauthorsofthesearticlesneithercitethegeneralliteratureonidentitynoroneanother.Asaconsequence,thisarticletakesonthetaskofanalyzingtheethnomusicologi-calliteraturea
3、roundbasicquestionsfoundinthegeneralliterature,includingwhatisidentity,wheredoesidentitycomefrom,howmanyidentitiesdowepossess,howisidentitycreated,andwhodefinesandinstitutionalizesidentity.Itconcludeswithsomereflectionsonwhatmusiccontributestotheconstruc-tionandsymbolizationofidentity.Keywords

5、ieldofethnomusicologythroughtheprismofoneofitsmajorjournals,Ethno-musicology.Addingfurtherconstraintstotheprojectintheinterestofbothcompletenessandbrevity,Ilimitthisreflectiontoarticlesinthejournalwiththewords“identity”or“identities”inthetitle.Asitturnsout,thefirstsucharticleappearedin1982,and
6、17ofthemhaveappeared1inthe25-yearperiodfrom1982to2006.ThissurveyoftheliteratureprovidesonepictureofhowAmericanethnomusicologistshavedealtwiththemeofmusicandidentityinthelastquartercentury.Iassumedatthebeginningofthisstudythatthemeslikemusicandidentity/ies,togetherwithmanyothercomparablethemes(
7、musicandpolitics,musicandgender,themeaningofmusic,theteachingandlearningofmusic,andsoforth),werewaysthatethnomusicologistsor-ganizedtheirresearchlives(readings,conferences,editedcollectionsof2essays)becauseofthe“gluttonous”natureofourfi
