2、RN,andHudeQuan,PhDAbstractObjectives:Acupunctureiscommonlyusedtotreatlow-backpain(LBP)andclinicaltrialshavedemonstrateditsefficacy.However,lessisknownabouthowtheutilizationofacupunctureimpactspublichealthserviceutili-zationintherealworld.Thisstudyinvestigatestheassociationbetweenacu

3、punctureutilizationforLBPandhealthcareutilizationbyassessingwhetherpatientswhoundergoacupuncturesubsequentlyusefewerhealthcareresourcesandwhetherthosepatientsdifferintheirhealthcareusefromthegeneralpopulationwithLBP.Design:Thisstudyemployedthedesignofatwo-grouppre/postsecondarydata

4、analysis.Settingandsubjects:Thereweretwostudypopulations.ToidentifypatientswhoreceivedacupunctureforLBPin2000,patientchartsatAlbertaregisteredacupunctureclinicswerereviewed.ThecomparisongroupwasidentifiedfromtheAlbertaphysicianclaimsadministrativedatabase.Acupuncturegroupcaseswerema

5、tchedwithfourcomparisoncasesfromthegeneralpopulationwithLBPbasedongenderandage.Outcomemeasures:NumberofphysicianvisitsandphysicianservicecostforLBP-relatedservicesfor1yearpre-andpostacupuncturetreatmentperiodwerecalculatedfromthephysicianclaimsdataforbothstudygroups.Results:Forthe2

6、01casesand804controls,themeanagewas48yearsand54%werefemale.Thenumberofphysicianvisitsforthe1-yearperiodpostacupuncturedecreased49%fortheacupuncturegroup(p<0.01)comparedtothe1-yearperiodpreacupuncture.Forthecomparisontherewasadecreaseof2%inphysicianvisits(p=0.59)forthesametimeperiod
