1、OneStopShopForEducatorsModernLanguagesLevelICourseDescriptionTheLevelIlanguagecoursefocusesonthedevelopmentofcommunicativecompetenceinthetargetlanguageandunderstandingoftheculture(s)ofthepeoplewhospeakthelanguage.Itassumesthatthestudentshaveminimalornopriorknowledgeo
2、fthelanguageandculture.Thiscoursemaybetaughtovertwoyears(e.g.,middleschoolprograms),overoneyear(e.g.,traditionalhighschoolprograms),orduringonesemester(e.g.,4x4blockschedule).Themajormeansofcommunicationbetweenstudentsandinstructorswillbeinthetargetlanguage.Becausest
3、udentsmaybeginformallanguagelearningatvariousstagesoftheircognitivedevelopment,teachersmustadjustvocabularyandcontenttoreflectdevelopmentallyappropriateinterests.Animportantcomponentoflanguageclassesistheuseofthelanguagebeyondtheclassroomintherealworld.Theintegration
4、oftechnologyisanimportanttoolinaccessingauthenticinformationinthetargetlanguageandinprovidingstudentstheopportunitytointeractwithnativespeakers.BytheendofLevelI,studentswillexhibitNovice-MidlevelproficiencyinspeakingandwritingandNovice-Highlevelproficiencyinlistening
5、,andreading(ACTFLProficiencyGuidelines,1999).StudentProfile(LevelI)ACTFLListeningProficiencyGuidelines(Novice-High)ListenersattheNovice-Highlevelareabletounderstandshort,learnedutterancesandsomesentence-lengthutterances,particularlywherecontextstronglysupportsunderst
6、andingandspeechisclearlyaudible.Theycancomprehendwordsandphrasesfromsimplequestions,statements,high-frequencycommandsandcourtesyformulae.Atthislevel,studentsmayrequirerepetition,rephrasingand/oraslowedrateofspeechforcomprehension.ACTFLSpeakingProficiencyGuidelines(No
