3、,Japan,andSouthKorea.Theauthorsuggeststhatenergycancreatesharedinterestsandopportunitiesforcoop-eration,ratherthanactasasourceofconfrontation.China,Japan,andSouthKoreacanworktogethertobuildmultilateralenergysecurityinstitutionsforcooperationinsucharea

6、-ingNorthAmerica’sandEurope’susage.1ThisgrowingenergydemandisapreeminentsecurityissueforNortheastAsiabecauseofitsdistinctiveenergy34AsianAffairsvulnerabilitiesandgeopoliticallocation.NortheastAsialackstheenergyresourcesneededtoaccommodateitsrapidlygro
7、wingenergy-intensiveeconomies.More-over,mostoftheregion’soilisimportedfromthevolatileMiddleEastandpassesthroughtheStraitofMalacca,whichisvulnerabletooilsupplydisruptions.Hence,alarmistspredictthatenergysecuritywillspawnincreasedrivalryandconfronta-tio
