2、yofcaregivers,whetherformalorinformal,paidorunpaid,arewomen.HealthcarerestructuringacrosstheWest,inspiredbyashiftfromthewelfaretoneoliberalstate,hasgreatlyimpactedcaregiving.Theideaforthiscollectionaroseasaresultofaspecialpapersessiononthegeographiesofcaregiving,heldaspartoftheAssociationofAmerican

3、GeographersMeeting(Chicago,2006).Inhearingthepaperspresented,itbecameclearthatgeographersareengagedininterestingandinnovativeresearchinthisarea,muchofwhichinvolveswomenscaregivingworkinparticular.Asbothunpaidinformalfamilycaregivingandpaidformalpractitioner-providedcarearemainlyaddressedinthiscolle

4、ction,theyarebrieflydiscussedinthiseditorial.Thisisfollowedbyadiscussionofthegeographicalcontributionstothegrowingcaregivingliterature,whichprovidesthefoundationforanoverviewofongoingandnewresearchdirections.Thefourarticlesthatmakeupthisspecialissuearethenreviewedinbrief.Finally,weidentifyissuesthat

5、cutacrossallfourarticles,leadingtoadiscussionoffutureresearchdirections.Keywords:caregiving;womenswork;caresettingsCaregivinghasalwaysbeenrecognizedasawomensissue,whetherbecauseitmayhappeninthefeminizedsphereofthehomeorbecauseofsocialandfamilialexpectationsthatconstructitaswomenswork.Therearemanyty

6、pesofcaregivers,withdifferentcategoriesofformal/informalandpaid/unpaidallofwhichhaveblurryboundaries.Thevastmajorityofcaregivers,whetherinformalorformal,paidorunpaid,arewomen.HealthcarerestructuringacrosstheWest,inspiredbyashiftfromthewelfaretoneoliberalstate,hasgreatlyimpactedwomenscaregivingwork.
