2、Currentcontroversiesinrootphysiologyrelatingtotheuptakeandtranslocationofmineralnutrientsarepresented.TheopportunitiesforaSIMScontributiontoresolvethesecontroversiesarediscussedforeachofthestableisotopetracersrelevanttoplantnutrition.Itisconcludedthatforallmajorn
3、utrientsexceptphosphorustherearepromisingstableisotopetracers.Atthesametime,therearechallengestoovercomeineachcase,withrespecttobackgroundlevels,peakinterferencesandsometimessensi-tivity.Techniquesoftissuepreparationandhandlingarediscussedinsomedetail,givingatten
4、tiontothespecialrequirementsofplanttissuepreparationandanalysisfordiffusableions.Itissuggestedthatadaptingapreparationandtransfersystem,designedforproductionofbulkfrozen-hydratedcryofracturedspecimens,toasecondaryionmassspectrometerwouldpermiteasy,rapidpreparatio
5、n.Additionally,thispreparationminimizesseveralserioustechnicalproblemsinherenttootherpreparativemethods.Difficul-tiesinquantitationaretreatedbriefly,outliningsomedifficultiesspecifictoplanttissueanalysis.Prospectsforfutureapplicationsinplantmineralnutritionareeva
