3、aveyieldedcontradictoryresults.ThisstudyassessestheeffectsofbrushclearingonrechargetoacaveatNaturalBridgeCaverns,centralTexasbyevaluatingchangesindriprate,dripwatercompositions,caveairCO2concentrations,andcalcitegrowthinacaveunderlyinganareaclearedof

4、brush.Dripsitesweremonitoredfor3yearspreclearingand2yearspostclearingatfivedripsitesbeneathandsevendripsitesnotbeneaththesurfaceclearedofbrush.Physicalandchemicaldripwaterparametersexhibitpreclearingandpostclearingvariability.Postclearingdripratechar

5、acteristicsreflectaninitialintervalofanomalouslyheavyrainfall,thenalongerdryperiod.Drip8786waterSr/Srvaluesdonotexhibitpreclearingtopostclearingvariationatsitesbeneaththeclearedareaandindicatenochangeinpostclearingwaterresidencetime.Significantdecrea

6、sesinpostclearingcaveairCO2areobservedatsevenofninedripsitesinthecavebeneaththeclearing.DecreasesincaveairCO2influencecalcitegrowth,whichimpactspostclearingdripwaterMg/CaandSr/Ca.DecreasesincaveairCO2immediatelyfollowingbrushclearingsuggestthatasigni

7、ficantportionofsoilCO2respirationisfromtreerootrespirationratherthanfromsoilmicrobialactivity.Seasonalcalcitegrowthpatterns,linkedtocaveairCO2,alsoexhibitvariabilitypostclearingandsuggestthatcavemineraldepositsmayrecordhistoricalchangesinvegetativeco
