4、showthatlateQuaternaryclimatechangeprobablydrovehighmillennialvariabilityinthedistributionandproductivityofthisfoundationspecies.Ourpredictionssuggestthatkelpforestbiomassincreaseduptothreefoldfromtheglacialmaximumtothemid-Holocene,thenrapidlydeclinedby4070percenttopresentlevels.Thepeakinkelpfores
5、tproductivitywouldhavecoincidedwiththeearliestcoastalarchaeologicalsitesintheNewWorld.SimilarlateQuaternarychangesinkelpforestdistributionandproductivityprobablyoccurredincoastalupwellingsystemsalongactivecontinentalmarginsworldwide,whichwouldhaveresultedincomplexshiftsintherelativeproductivityoft
