3、hadditionalsedimentaryandgeomorphologicalevidence,indicatestheiroriginislinkedtofluvialaction.Currently,nonaturalprocessesexistonEarthpotentiallygeneratingequivalentdeposits,eitherinPatagoniaorelsewherearoundtheworld.Thehydrologicalconditionsresponsibleforthegravelformati
4、onwerethuslikelyverydifferentfromthosecurrentlyprevailinginArgentinePatagonia,suggestingthegravelmantelsformedduringtheLateCenozoic,whensurfacedrainagenetworksofrelativelyhighenergyexistedintheregion.Suchhighenergywasinducedbypowerfulflowratesand/orstrongwatergradients,at
5、tributabletotectonism,epirogenesisand/orloweringofsealevel.Periodswithwaterflowregimessignificantlyhigherthanatpresentcharacterizedthefullglacialphaseslastingseveralthousandsofyears,correspondingtoeachofthemanyglaciationsofthePlioceneandPleistocene.Thecapacityforerosionand
6、watertransportwouldhavebeenincreasedbythesealeveldropcharacteristicofeachfullglacialphase.Therewerealsomuchshorterperiods,knownasterminations,representingtheabruptendingofthemainglacialeventsduringwhichlargeamountsofwaterwerereleasedasaresultoftheintensivemeltingoftheCor
7、dilleranicesheet.Duringinterglacialperiods,intheabsenceoflargemassesoficeinthemountainsandwithaveragetemperaturessimilartoorhigherthanatpresent,layersofgravelweredepositedasaresultoftectonicorepirogenicmovementorbyreactivationofdrainagenetworksproducedbysealevellowering(
