3、erlandingsiteatascaleofmeters.ThestirfacesurroundingtheMarsPathfinderlanderinAresVallisappearsconsistentwithorbitalinterpretations,namely,thatitwouldbearockyplaincomposedofmaterialsdepositedbycatastrophicfloods.Thesurfaceandobservedmaximumclastsizeappearssi
4、milartopredictionsbasedonananalogoussurfaceoftheEphrataFanintheChanneledScablandofWashingtonstate.Theelevationofthesitemeasuredbyrelativelysmallfootprintdelay-Dopplerradariswithin100mofthatdeterminedbytwo-wayrangingandDopplertrackingofthespacecraft.Thenearl
5、yequalelevationsoftheMarsPathfinderandVikingLander1sitesallowedapredictionoftheatmosphericconditionswithaltitude(presstire,temperattire,andwinds)thatwerewellwithintheentry,descent;andlandingdesignmargins.High-resolution(-•38m/pixel)VikingOrbiter1imagesshowe
6、dasparselycrateredstirfacewithsmall•knobswithrelativelylowslopes,consistentwithobservationsofthesefeaturesfromthelander.Measuredrockabundanceiswithin10%ofthatexpectedfromVikingorbiterthermalobservationsandmodels.Thefractionalareacoveredbylarge,potentiallyha
7、zardousrocksobservedissimilartothatestimatedfrommodelrockdistributionsbasedondatafromtheVikinglandingsites,Earthanalogsites,andtotalrockabundance.Thebulkandfine-componentthermalinertiasmeasuredfromorbitaresimilartothosecalculatedfromtheobservedrocksize-freq
