2、oyouinBritishandAmericanusagewasprecipitatedbyasituationatanAmericanuniversity,inwhichanativeArabicspeakersaidthankstoyouinisolation,makinghisintendedmeaningunclear.ThestudyanalyzesuseofthankstoyouintheCorpusofContemporaryAmericanEnglishandtheBritishNationalCorpustogaininsightsforEnglishlan

3、guageinstruction/assessmentintheAmericancontext,aswellasEnglish-as-a-lingua-francacontextswherethemajorityofspeakersarenotnativespeakersofEnglishorarespeakersofdifferentvarietiesofEnglishbutwhereAmericanorBritishEnglishareforeducationalpurposesthestandardvarieties.Analysisofthetwocorporarev

4、ealedthreefunctionsforthankstoyoucommontoBritishandAmericanusage:expressinggratitude,communicating“becauseofyou”positively,andcommunicating“becauseofyou”negatively(asinsarcasm).Afourthuseofthankstoyou,thankingjournalists/guestsforbeingonnewsprograms/talkshows,occurredintheAmericancorpusonly
