2、theInternationalMathemat-icalUnion,JacobPalis.Laudaldescribedacampaignthatwasrecentlylaunchedbysomeactivistsinthedepartmenttoestablishaprizeinmathematics.TheyhopeditwouldpersuadetheinternationalmathematicalcommunityandNorwegianpoliti-cians...topresenttheAbelPrizeasthemissingNobelPrizeinmathematic
3、s.1Untilquiterecently,nomathematicianhadsuggestedthatthetimewasrighttoestablishascientificprizeinmathematicscomparabletothevariousNobelPrizes.Itistruethatthereexistedseveralinternationalprizesinmathematics,buttheob-viousabsenceofaprizethatcouldbecomparedwiththemostprestigiousprizesinphysics,chemis
4、tryandmedicinehadbeenasourceoffrustrationamongmathe-maticianseversincetheNobelPrizeswerefirstawardedin1901.Themathematicalcommunityhadapparentlylearnedtolivewiththisfrustration,butwhentheinitia-tivetoestablishaprizeinmathematicsonthesamelevelastheNobelwassuddenlyintroducedfromthemathematicalperiph
5、eryofNorway,itwasawakeupcallthatresonatedwithmathematicians.Theinitiativewouldinashorttimegainsupport,notonlyamongNorwegianmathematicians,butalsointheinternationalmathemat-icalcommunityaswellasfrominfluentialsectorsofNorwegiansociety.Onlyafterafewmonthsofthecampaignbeinglaunchedinthespringof2001,t
