3、echanicalresponsesrequireslargesystems,computationallyaffordablebutlessaccurateclassicalatomistictreatmentsoftheatomicscalearewidelyadoptedandonlymultiscaleclassicalatomistic-to-continuumbridgingisachieved.Asafirststeptowardsachievingaccuratemultiscalemodelsf

4、ornanoobjects,basedonaquantum-mechanicaldescriptionofchemicalbonding,herewepresentaninge-nioussymmetry-adaptedatomisticschemethatperformscalculationsunderheli-calboundaryconditions.Theutilityofthemicroscopicmethodisillustratedwithexamplesdiscussingthenanomec
