2、8,2012Publishedonline:September7,2012AbstractThisarticlereviewsrecentadvancesanddevelopmentsinthefieldofwearablesensorswithemphasisonasubclassofthesedevicesthatareabletoperformhighly-sensitiveelectrochemicalanalysis.Recentinsightsintonovelfabrica-tionmethodologiesandelectrochem
3、icaltechniqueshaveresultedinthedemonstrationofchemicalsensorsabletoaugmentconventionalphysicalmeasurements(i.e.heartrate,EEG,ECG,etc.),therebyprovidingaddeddimensionsofrich,analyticalinformationtothewearerinatimelymanner.Wearableelectrochemicalsensorshavebeeninte-gratedontoboth
4、textilematerialsanddirectlyontheepidermisforvariousmonitoringapplicationsowingtotheiruniqueabilitytoprocesschemicalanalytesinanon-invasiveandnon-obtrusivefashion.Inthismanner,multi-ana-lytedetectioncaneasilybeperformed,inrealtime,inordertoascertaintheoverallphysiologicalhealtho
5、fthewearerortoidentifypotentialoffendersintheirenvironment.Ofprofoundimportanceisthedevelopmentofanunderstandingoftheimpactofmechanicalstrainontextile-andepidermal(tattoo)-basedsensorsandtheirfailuremechanismsaswellasthecompatibilityofthesubstrateemployedinthefabricationprocess
6、.Weconcludethisreviewwitharetrospectiveoutlookofthefieldandidentifypotentialimplicationsofthisnewsensingparadigminthehealthcare,fitness,security,andenvironmentalmonitoringdomains.Withcontinuedinnovationanddetailedat-tentiontocorechallenges,itisexpectedthatwearableelectrochemica
